How to Identify Clip-on Earring Backs
Vintage clip and screw back style earrings vary in the type of backs attached to the earring. Some back styles are designed to hold more weighty adornments, others for petite, small or children's ears, etc.Here are the most common styles of clips and photos of clip styles. These are examples of the SIMPLE CLIP; also called a STANDARD CLIP. These are good for lightweight earrings.

This is a PADDLE BACK CLIP. It is the most common type, and the kind we usually think about when we think of clip earrings. They can hold weightier earrings and are adjustable for comfort.

This is an example of a SIMPLE SCREWBACK CLIP. More popular in older styles, it needs to be screwed tightly onto the ear, and loosened to be removed.

This is an adjustable clip called a HINGED SCREWBACK CLIP. It can be adjusted for comfort for the individual wearer, and able to be worn repeatedly without having to readjust the screw each time.
